On18 February 2016, final Appeal Court of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) delivered an important judgment in favour of Bank Mellat of Iran, represented by Zaiwalla & Co, upholding the decision of the EU General Court that the sanctions were unfairly imposed against Bank Mellat by the Council of the European Union since 2010. The Court of Justice further confirmed the earlier annulment of the fund-freezing measures placed against Bank Mellat and held that the European Council failed to provide sufficient grounds or evidence in support if its decisions. As per the rules of procedure of the Court, the Council of EU has been ordered to pay the legal costs incurred by Bank Mellat in both sets of proceedings.
