Seeking Justice: Supreme Court Takes on Manipur’s Ethnic Clashes

In a momentous stride towards justice and reconciliation, the Supreme Court of India has taken up a series of petitions addressing the longstanding ethnic clashes in Manipur. Led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and joined by Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, the bench is poised to address critical issues affecting the state’s communities.

Among the petitions awaiting consideration is one filed by the Manipur Tribal Forum Delhi, seeking the protection of the vulnerable Kuki tribe by the Indian Army. Additionally, Dinganglung Gangmei, Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, challenges the Manipur High Court’s directive to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list—a contentious issue that previously sparked violent riots.

Displaying a proactive approach, the Supreme Court, on July 20, took Suo moto cognizance of a distressing video depicting two women subjected to sexual violence amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict. In response, the court directed both the Centre and the State Government to update on actions taken against the perpetrators. While recognizing the government’s responsibility, the court firmly stated its intention to intervene if timely measures are not implemented.

The Supreme Court’s intervention offers hope for justice, peace, and reconciliation in Manipur. With the nation eagerly awaiting the outcomes, there is renewed optimism that this landmark case will heal wounds and safeguard the rights and dignity of all communities in the state. The esteemed bench holds the responsibility of delivering justice and forging a harmonious path for Manipur’s future, capturing the nation’s attention and anticipation.
