Lex Witness acknowledges yet another author grooming up in NLU Delhi’s Suhail Mathur and his recently launched Bestseller – THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS
I strongly feel that any and every writer must write on topics they as a reader would like to read. Thankfully, Historical My thological fiction is extremely popular in India and so, I didn’t have to worry too much on that front.
I have forever loved grand and epic adventures with lots of characters and more importantly, lots of events taking place that keeps the readers glued. I was fascinated by Hindu mythology and inspired by the revolutionaries. Thus, I was very clear that THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS had to be an amalgamation of all these wonderful things incorporated in an equally interesting manner.
Hindu mythology has been very close to my heart and has even formed the crux of one of my forthcoming books, which is a mythological fantasy.
Lord Bhairav is an avatar of Lord Shiva yet little is known about him. This was exactlywhy I chose my book to be centred on a town where he is the main deity. This gives a lot of potential to the author to play and mould the story, something one may not be able to do if writing a book on Lord Krishna or Lord Rama since so much is already known about them. However, the book is primarily a historical fiction with adequate doses of mythology and not the other way round. The fact that I also worship Lord Bhairav’s child form also happened to be a great factor.
Ah, the ‘BESTSELLER’ tag really feels nice. Well, I genuinely feel that there is a lot more to lawyers than what people expect them to be. I used to direct films earlier and lot of people were surprised that a law student was at the helm of such a craft. It is important to end this misconception that has crept in and I feel glad that with THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS becoming a ‘Bestseller’ the effort has paid off to an extent.
As mentioned earlier, the revolutionary movement inspired me greatly and I wanted to write a book that was based on them but was a stark departure from how books and films centring around revolutionaries have been written or made. The story was in my mind, start to finish and I knew that the plot was a winner.
There is no point in doing something that has already been done before. The challenge is to pick up a known concept and showcase it in a never seen before manner.
The protagonist of THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS, Keshav Raichand, is unlike any revolutionary you have come across ever before. He is an affluent, Oxford educated son of a rich zamindar and has cordial ties with the British. What sets him apart from others is his knowledge, intelligence and witty one liners.
The book being an epic and grand adventure is an interesting mix of several characters ranging from two soldiers with a mysterious past, a temple priest connected to an ancient prophecy, a bomb expert with a rich historical lineage, four mysterious men, and some very formidable British antagonists.
The book has a very prominent court case replete with all the necessary accusations and rebuttals and it is here that my legal training came to my rescue. The courtroom drama is one of the highlights of the book and the verbal volleys exchanged are great fun to read.
I am delighted that legal luminaries like Mr. Ajay Bahl, Mr. Amarendra Sharan and Mr. Shyam Grover have appreciated THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS as well.
Thankfully for me and my readers, I had no such difficulty since I was very clear in what I wanted to narrate.
The real challenge for a first time author is to find a good publisher, who truly accepts your work. For THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS, I received 16 contracts, some from leading publishers, but many of them asked me to buy 400 copies of my own book or pay close to Rs. 2 lakhs for the book to be published and I wasn’t willing to do that. Iam eternally grateful to my publisher, Author’s Empire India and my literary agents, THE BOOK BAKERS, who got me a great deal and designed a superb cover for THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS!
Never. I write books, direct films, do cricket commentary but never at the cost of my professional course that I am pursuing from NLU Delhi. It is important to understand the difference between passion and profession while letting them co-exist simultaneously
I have had successful internships at the top most law firms of the country like Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB & Partners and Trilegal and was offered a second internship at all of them. Now that I am at the end of my journey as a law student, I am eagerly hoping for a recruitment opportunity at a top tier law firm or a successful MNC. Fingers crossed.
