I singled out the “Witness” (December 09) from the book stall as it just looked so inviting and was pleasantly surprised to see one of the most important topics, the Right to Information Act as the cover story. We all know that the Right to Information Act is a potent device to weed out corruption from government institutions and it’s also a perfect indicator to measure how much corruption has eaten into the vitals of the country. But unfortunately, it is observed that the provisions of the RTI Act are being increasingly misused by a large number of persons for settling personal and family disputes. It is also seen that the RTI Act is also used by many for settling scores or taking revenge against some person. You have rightly pointed out that “Right to Information Act gives freedom to the Indian Citizens to access information from the highest public echelons”. The Act has empowered the citizens and it's as essential as the freedom of speech and freedom of expression are granted by the Constitution. One way of preventing misuse is to restrict its usage to those who are an interested party in the matter; have no access to information being sought under normal channels and whose interest is directly and personally affected. As the RTI Act is being misused, it seems some modifications are required.
I am glad to see your journal and am quite confident that we will get a platform where we can fearlessly point out to legislative shortfalls and errors in court orders.
I want to congratulate you on venturing “Lex Witness”. I have read your magazine and must say that you are doing really a good job. Some of the issues which you have dealt like Title Insurance and overview on European company caw were really interesting and informative. Additionally, your magazine has given food for thought to the readers. Moreover, you have broken the jinx attached to existing legal magazines, which are stalemate in style and coverage. Hope you will keep the good work going and will illuminate the readers with critical legal issues in future.
That there is a dire need for such a publication is evident from the skyrocketing circulation. The quality of the publication and the people behind it are some of the reasons for the same. As we move along, I am sure we will be interacting more and more, sharing ideas and suggestions to profile your magazine further.
I am happy to know that WITNESS has expanded its reach to Bangalore as well. The articles and issues taken up by your magazine are really relevant and thought-evoking. I am a regular reader and have seen the magazine growing and improving with each issue. I congratulate you and your team for the efforts.
I have been regularly receiving WITNESS. I am amazed to see the response you have received from the legal fraternity as well as commoner with in a short time of your publication. It is very interesting to note that you have been covering wide ranging topics and happenings in the legal filed. I wish you could make it more interesting by publishing a gist of few important cases decided by Supreme Court and high courts, jokes, cartoons and judiciary in news. As you may be aware, various high courts and Supreme Court as well, have been deciding thousands of cases everyday and a few them are per incuriam. If you can rope in few Advocates from the Bar and give their opinions, it will be useful to lawyers since many of them have no access to all the judgments. Even though both print media and electronic media have been widely covering the impeachment proceedings of the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, it is surprising that you have not covered the same as news item. There is a move by the Central Government to allow foreign law firms to practice in India. You should start a debate on the same so that legal fraternity can express their opinion. I wish all the success to WITNESS.
