Law Firms In India Are Getting Younger

Law Firms In India Are Getting Younger

Karan Bindra, Founder & Partner, KIAA, in an interview with Lex Witness bureau explains why he started early and what he wants to achieve early in his life…

What went into starting your venture?

As three enthusiastic young graduates and some experience we wanted to start something of our own. We had the exposure in different fields of laws and we were bored with working under seniors and wanted to work on our own. We wanted to start a professional-oriented law firm as the market is dominated by family run law firms.

What were the challenges in setting up the firm? How has the journey been so far?

Initially we were told by the people that we are new and did not have enough exposure and knowledge. But we had all been exposed as we were all working before we started this. I was working with Mr. Hemant Singh and before this I had worked with Mr. Himanshu Bajaj and had full exposure to the field and hence acquired enough knowledge. There has always been criticism but it was motivating and we worked very hard. We as partners have great coordination and enthusiasm and have faith in ourselves. I wanted to start early instead of waiting for some more years and then start. The journey so far has been very exciting. At the early stage it was very hard and difficult to build clients. We had to do a lot of networking in the beginning but, however, only after four months we started getting work.

How did the first client happen?

It was a case related to family law. It came through a personal contact and the client was a CEO of a well known multinational firm and after having seen that we successfully handled her case, she delegated all her company’s legal responsibilities to us.

How have you managed various responsibilities within the firm?

I particularly look after the management, and on the servicing part I look after the Intellectual Property, Company Law and Civil Litigation as well as Cyber Laws. The other two partners look after criminal and family matters. Besides three partners we have associates who fulfill their roles. We have a very dedicated workforce. We have created a full service law firm and we deal with legal compliance and consultancy also.

Tell us something about yourself?

As a graduate from the Amity Law School, I specialized further in Environmental Law from the American University with some hands on experience with the World Bank. Apart from this I am a Master’s in International Law & Economics from the University of Bern.

What is your vision for the future?

We are focusing on litigation and building up the name KIAA. In five years time we want to see KIAA as a Tier 1 law firm. We are not competing with other law firms but we want to build our legal expertise and mind force competent enough. I visualize collating all the potential, my friends and colleagues have, and look forward to building a foundation with all of them as partners, as youthfully as possible.
