For a student who opts for pursuing a law course, it is an avenue which can give him a rewarding career, both in terms of money as well as fame. He would attend a Law institute for three years or five years (coupled with another degree of B.A., B.Sc. or BBA) and then graduate as a lawyer.
He has either some family member or near relative as a lawyer or has seen a lawyer in movies. For him courts and chambers of lawyers are well furnished offices which are equipped with modern facilities and the lawyers and judges appear to him to be powerful persons. Students aspire to be one of them after finishing Law Course.
But the important question is Law Course, LL.B. Course – what is it all about? Law is not a word. It is a whole system where one finds jargons of rules, regulations, judgments, agreements, protocols, treaties and what not.
For a common man, law is a complicated concept which is beyond his comprehension and thus whenever a need arises; he consults his lawyer and trusts him for his competence and knowledge. The places where the representation by a lawyer is not allowed, as in case of some tribunals or not even needed, for instance getting a marriage registered, even there an ordinary man contacts a lawyer, seeks his advise and then proceed.
Corporates and businessmen, before going in for decisions like mergers, amalgamations etc. or before forming a partnership concern or for filing or defending routine matters, place reliance on the skills and wisdom of a lawyer.
When a tenant or a landlord of a premise is troubled by the other, when a husband or wife is harassed by the other, when an employee or employer is troubled by the other, they, in search of respite from their problems, contact a lawyer
Such is the sanctity of the relation between a lawyer and a client. Thus law course is not about becoming a lawyer, but it is about becoming a good counselor, a good human being, an updated intellectual, an angel who is to help all people, regardless of their religious, caste or cultural affiliations and advise them so as to honour the trust which they place in their lawyer for their invaluable rights and securities.
Law is not a profession. Just like a doctor cures a patient, a lawyer cures the society by fighting against vices and fighting for justice and humanity. If one intends to choose law as a career, then he must learn to strike the balance between the duty of providing his services to the community at large and the desire of becoming a lawyer of name and fame.
Education itself is a much more responsible and promising field to be in as far as developing nations like India are concerned. Furthermore, being an integral part of the legal education fraternity of the country, it becomes even more important to maintain a perfect blend of professional as well as academic excellence in mentoring students of the law course. We at IMS Law College, ensure this blend in order to put an effort in generating the younger but a competitive legal India.
