I initially led the legal function for our Indian entity, building and scaling it in line with the evolving needs of a rapidly growing business. Over time, my role expanded to that of Group Risk & Compliance Officer and Business Counsel for our R&D and Biologics divisions, reflecting the increasing complexity and global reach of our operations.
I hold a law degree with specializations in Intellectual Property, ESG, and Business & Climate Change. My responsibilities have included managing cross-border transactions, complex contractual negotiations, and secretarial matters across key regions including the EU and Middle East. I have also led high-impact transactions in CDMO, CRAMS, domestic business (B2C) and R&D verticals.
In addition, I established the company’s Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) cell and led the setup of ESG function, aligning legal and compliance frameworks with sustainable and forward-looking business practices. My tenure ends with PI Industries on 31st October 2025, following which I shall transition into new responsibilities in the Life Science Ingredients & Specialty Chemicals sector.
My professional journey commenced within the insurance sector, where I acquired substantial experience in core litigation matters across district courts, Ombudsman hearings, regulatory proceedings, and appeals before the National Commission. Additionally, I had the opportunity to collaborate with External Legal Services and provide support to foreign General Counsels, which enhanced my understanding of cross jurisdictional legal frameworks.
Subsequently, I transitioned to establishing legal risk and compliance functions, which offered me valuable insights into the dynamic nature of the legal profession. This experience has solidified my conviction that the role of a General Counsel extends beyond being a mere gatekeeper of legal matters to becoming a strategic enabler of business growth and governance.
Yes, the role of General Counsels (GCs) is evolving significantly in today’s business landscape. GCs are no longer seen solely as legal advisors or risk gatekeepers they’re increasingly expected to act as strategic partners to the business. This evolution includes involvement in key decisions around expansions, governance, ESG, compliance, cybersecurity, and even brand reputation. Modern GCs are balancing legal risk with commercial objectives, helping shape policy, guiding ethical conduct, and driving business sustainability all while building agile, tech-enabled legal teams that can keep pace with rapid change.

Group Risk & Compliance Officer,

General Counsels across industries consistently face a few core challenges: balancing legal risk with business objectives, staying ahead of evolving regulatory landscapes, managing cross functional stakeholder expectations, and ensuring compliance without slowing down innovation or growth. Additionally, GCs must often do more with less optimizing limited resources while maintaining quality, speed, and strategic insight.
Improving synergies between law firms and in-house legal teams requires a shift from transactional engagement to strategic collaboration. Clear communication of business context, expectations, and risk appetite combined with transparency, mutual respect, and consistent feedback can significantly enhance efficiency, trust, and outcomes on both sides.
As someone leading legal, risk & compliance affairs, staying current with legal developments and compliance requirements is critical. To support continued learning and CLE, I rely on a combination of trusted online platforms and publications from the leading law firms. I also find membership in professional organizations invaluable, as they offer a broad range of on-demand courses, webinars, and networking opportunities tailored for legal professionals.
Given its established presence, active involvement in the legal community, and recognition by both professionals and academics, I consider Lex Witness a reliable and valuable source for legal news, insights, and developments in India
Additionally, I regularly use legal research tools like Manupatra and SCC Online, which provide access to real-time legal updates along with integrated CLE content. Participating in industry-specific webinars and virtual conferences helps me stay ahead of emerging trends. Finally, I believe that internal training programs tailored to our company’s specific needs complement external learning and help reinforce practical application.
For anyone exploring a legal career as an in-house counsel, my advice would be to develop a strong understanding not just of the law, but also of the business you’re supporting. Being an effective in-house lawyer means being a trusted advisor who balances legal risk with commercial realities.
Focus on building skills in problem solving, communication, and negotiation, as these are crucial when working cross functionally with different departments. Also, stay curious and committed to continuous learning laws, regulations, and business environments evolve rapidly, so ongoing education is key.
Finally, cultivate relationships and networks both inside and outside your organization. Strong connections can provide valuable insights and support throughout your career.
