I am glad to write about Lex WITNESS. Lex WITNESS was the first genuine magazine for all legal professionals in India and continues to remain the same till date. The quality of articles, news and write-up remains absolutely professional. I have seen the magazine being a part of legal library for many General Counsels and prominent law firms. A must have magazine for all legal professionals including young law students, law teachers, lawyers and in-house counsels. Lex WITNESS events are equally good and some of the topics deliberated in those events are really thought provoking. I have been associated with many of these events as a key note speaker. My association with Lex WITNESS dates back to 2012 when it had organized ‘Media, Advertising and Entertainment Legal Summit 2012’ on 27th September 2012 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. The memories are still fresh in my mind as it was the first Legal summit I attended after entering the Corporate through the 1st job of my life in March 2012. Needless to mention that it was a first, fresh and amazing experience for a novice like me. It’s always a wonderful feeling to reach a milestone and I’m delighted to learn that Lex WITNESS – India’s first magazine on legal & corporate affairs has successfully completed 13 years. A huge achievement indeed and congratulations to each and every one of you at Lex WITNESS who made this possible. I vividly recall when I got a call from Neelima Maheshwari inviting me to speak at a seminar organised by Lex WITNESS. That was 2014. And I would thereafter speak at numerous seminars organised by Lex WITNESS, with colleagues from different spaces within the legal fraternity. I must also confess one of the key motivating factors which made me say yes, each time (barring a few) to speak at the various seminars organized by Lex WITNESS was the subject and content - curated with extreme professionalism and relevance to the ever-changing market landscape. Additionally, I would also urge my colleagues (irrespective of seniority) in the legal fraternity to grab a copy of the monthly issue – which covers very meaningful and pertinent topics which I personally find very insightful. It is also worthwhile to mention that while its competition has been actively involved in conducting various prize-giving gala events for the legal fraternity, I believe Lex WITNESS, in its wisdom, has intentionally chosen to stay away from such vanity projects. I also believe that Lex WITNESS’ decision stems from recognising the transparency issues of the awards and awardees, which have little or no significance save for the photo shoot and social media posts. Integrity is not a fashion statement but one of the key foundational stones for any visionary and forward-thinking organisation which has been built to last. I wish Lex WITNESS and its employees the very best. Lex WITNESS has not only provided a platform for like-minded professionals to come together and exchange ideas on pertinent legal issues but also provided recognition to the outstanding legal professionals. I remember having interacted with esteemed colleagues from the industry at seminars on new laws and legal challenges that the Companies Act, 2013 and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 brought about at the time of their introduction. During sixty years of my practice as a lawyer I have had the privilege of associating myself with hundreds of young lawyers and interns in my office. Some of these associates have become and retired as judges of High Courts and the Supreme Court, have become senior counsel, law officers, heads of legal departments of multinational companies, some have set up their own law firms which are now counted among the best in the country. Some became members of institutions like CAT and SAT. It was not that it was a learning experience for the young associates – but it was also a learning experience for me as a lawyer. I had to constantly brush up my knowledge about legal developments and case law in order to give and provide guidance to the youngsters. It was accordingly a two-way traffic learning. In a lawyer’s life learning is a continuing process. Whenever some associate sought my permission to leave at the end of the day saying that he or she had finished their work I used to and still do tell them that you can leave for the day but don’t say that your work is finished. A lawyer’s work is unending. It is not just studying the case files or drafting commercial contracts – the work includes constant research, looking into latest case law and global contemporaneous developments.

It is in this process of continuing legal learning that law journals like Lex WITNESS play a very important and significant role. I have been a voracious reader of Lex WITNESS, possibly right from its inception and have seen it grow into an invaluable source of legal information, research, brilliant articles, important case law, developments in the field of law, new legislations and meaningful debates and discussions on legal issues. Lex WITNESS gives a complete picture about law and legal developments which are so vital for not only practicing lawyers, law firms, in house counsel, judges and jurists, academicians but even for the law students. I applaud the publication of your fabulous magazine for enhancing the overall understanding of various legal matters. I haven’t seen such a magazine in the legal space, which keeps me updated and gives me a glimpse of what is happening around related legal fields. I particularly enjoy reading sections like Expert Speak and IPR Exchange in Lex WITNESS. In addition, I like the coverage of mixed legal and corporate matters. Almost every time I see the magazine, I find something different and unique yet exciting to read about.

It’s been a long journey and my association also goes back more than a decade. However, the main differentiating factor that makes Lex WITNESS unique is its proactive approach in knowledge building and bringing the legal fraternity on a platform to discuss new changes in regulatory regime or judicial pronouncements. Lex WITNESS as a legal magazine has reached across all corners be it in house counsels, law firms, Counsels, Students and many more in the legal field. I would like to share an interesting incident which is a testimony of Lex WITNESS widespread circulation. One of my college friends from Delhi University could connect with me with the help of Lex WITNESS Magazine. He is Sudhir Mishra, Founding Partner of Trust Legal. We both graduated from Delhi University and then moved on in our career and lost touch for over two decades. Sudhir saw my article in Lex WITNESS and could reach out to me. He is based out of New Delhi and a prominent environment lawyer of the country. Lex WITNESS has covered varieties of subject and not focussed on few, this is commendable and speaks of continuous efforts towards knowledge building initiatives. I was introduced to Lex WITNESS sometime in mid-2018, when we as Licensing Executives Society (LES) signed them up as the official secretariat for the LES APAC International conference that year. The event was a huge success, thanks to months of joint planning and execution. Lex WITNESS enjoys great patronship among the leading law firms and in-house Legal and IP fraternity globally. This, combined with the strength of the LES network led to joint success not only for this event but also for many more IP and Licensing events that LES – Lex WITNESS partnership delivered across multiple cities across India, and also in virtual mode.

Building awareness about legal subjects resembles the famous proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and therefore any effort in this direction requires the right resources, dedication, perfection and commitment. It is a long way to go in a country like us to have optimum awareness about law and law making and it was my wish to have elementary legal education mandatory for all to make citizens aware about the basic legal rights. This may help the common person to have informed opinions, developing informed societies and ultimately informed civilization. Lex WITNESS (LW) commenced its journey of spreading the legal awareness about 13 years ago and with the dedication and commitment of the team, has established itself as one of the best legal magazines and knowledge partners. I have been associated with the Lex WITNESS for the last 10 years and it has been a journey of self-awareness and enlightenment. Every time I attended the program, I always felt about my ignorance and therefore learnt something and other at the end of the program. During these programs, I was fortunate to meet luminaries, who are Authorities in their respective domains and after meeting them, I always had a feeling “as you know more about them or the subject, the less you know’ and therefore the urge of knowing more in the quest of vast knowledge available on other side. On the other hand, the magazine has been disseminating knowledge consistently on contemporary issues. The cherry on the cake are the candid views expressed by experts on various such subjects forcing one to not only think out of the box but also help one understand the context, background and objective of the subject matter. For the practitioners of knowledge in the field of law, knowledge coming from any direction is welcome, however knowledge being imparted by Lex WITNESS is proving to be as if casted and programmed for professionals in all walks of life for ensuring maximum benefit. While for students, this may create desire to know more in their formative years paving way for becoming successful professional later, for practicing lawyers, it helps in sharing the wisdom, which could be used by them while interacting with their clients, for in house professionals, this knowledge comes on handy, when they may be dealing with day to day issues within their organization and for policy makers, this may work and conduit for keeping eye on, how the law being implemented and therefore brings new perspectives for course correction or further development. Over the years, Lex WITNESS has been able to outreach masses in large numbers including the corporate world, lawyers, courts. Law colleges and courts provide a base for not only sharing the views but also collecting the feedback and shaping the thinking process, therefore impacting the society we live in. This also provides a network to those who need it the most. For students, these platforms provide various guidance and professionals provide such guidance. For Lawyers, these programs/ magazines provide links to clients, working professionals connect with their community and with others in the overall ecosystem. However, like any other educational company, Lex WITNESS helps in spreading the much-required awareness about various subjects related to law and implementation of law. It would be unfair on my part not to talk about the Lex WITNESS team organizing these programs. They have always been warm hosts, approachable, punctual and honest to their jobs. While many commence the journey like Lex WITNESS, but very few can sustain and Team Lex WITNESS’s efforts can be compared with a marathon requires perseverance, stamina, focus and zeal to do something. Team Lex WITNESS has been fantastic in all its endeavors and has successfully achieved the desired results as best participant in the game. I wish all the best to them in future.
