I TechLaw hosted 200 attendees at the 15th Annual International Asia conference in Bangalore, India between January 30 and Feb 1, 2019. The conference focused on the Re-Imagining Tech Regulations for the Digital Economy. It was an exceptional event praised for the quality of the speakers and presentations. We express our deepest thanks to our Global Sponsors: Gowling WLG, International Center for Dispute Resolution, McCarthy Tetrault, Niederer Kraft Frey, and Seyfarth Shaw, Lex Witness for being the Official Magazine Partner and all of our conference sponsors who contributed to the success of our conference
Ravi kick-started the conference with a wonderful presentation on India’s startup space – the way disruptors are changing way of life and the opportunities that remain untapped. He emphasized on need for improvement in the Banking, Retail, Insurance, Education, Agriculture, Healthcare, Food-Services, and Media and Entertainment. Ravi is one of the start-up gurus of India.
This year we brought back the trademark ITechLaw CyberSpaceCamp® to India. This is a classroom style learning program on contemporary technology topics specifically aimed at young lawyers. This year’s camp covered topics, such as, role of a general counsel, licensing and services arrangement in technology transactions, GDPR, the personal data protection bill, interception, blocking, cyber-crime and so on. The camp featured legal heads of large multinational companies: Aditi Jha from LinkedIn, Ajay Chandru from Amazon and Helen Pari from WeWork, India, in addition to international presenters Claire Bernier, ADSTO, France, and Dov Scherzer, Polsinelli, United States.
There were eight Substantive Law Committees who met on the day preceding the conference to discuss current matters in Data Protection, E-Commerce, Cyber Crime, Intellectual Property, Interactive Entertainment and Media, Dispute Resolution, Technology Sourcing, and Startups. These meetings discussed the current status of laws and regulations in India and what’s coming next. More than 50 people participated in the Data Protection meeting.
Moderated by Priti Suri, Founder Partner, PSA, this session gave an inside look at the lives of four different general counsel. From the agility and flexibility needed to budget management and team issues, this session covered what all delegates wanted to know about In-House Counsel. Overall, 29% of attendees were In-House Counsel; one of the largest representations ever at an ITechLaw Conference.
Revathy Ashok, Co-founder of Startegy Garage and Ashwathy Babu Pillai, In-House Counsel at Microsoft, shared their wisdom with attendees in the ITechLaw Women’s International Network (I-WIN meeting). After both sets of remarks, attendees asked presenters questions about balancing personal life with work and how to address common challenges in behaviour and perception.
One strength of an ITechLaw conference is the networking that occurs between attendees. These informal conversations lead to business partnerships, referrals, and deep knowledge sharing. 55% of attendees cited networking opportunities as one of the top three reasons to attend the conference.w
