ACC holds Annual Meeting, Elects New Board

WASHINGTON (August 5, 2019) — Over 3,500 in-house lawyers, legal services providers, and business thought leaders flew into Phoenix, Arizona at the end of October for the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC)’s 2019 Annual Meeting. Some 25 countries, including India, were represented. Trevor Faure, CEO of Smarter Law Solutions and ACC’s benchmarking partner, gave the opening plenary, “Smarter Law: From emotional to artificial intelligence, transforming busy lawyers into business leaders.”

Other faculty included leaders from Capital One, Motorola, Starbucks, Thomson Reuters, Western Union. They covered topics as far-ranging as law department performance, in-house law and geopolitics, new technology, legal operations, corporate culture, and compliance and ethics.

The Annual Meeting also saw the election of the 2020 ACC board of directors. The new officers are:
  • Chair: Anneliese Reinhold, general counsel & senior vice president regulatory affairs, du, Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (United Arab Emirates)
  • Vice Chair: Jo Anne Schwendinger, chief legal officer, compliance officer & secretary, II-VI Incorporated (USA)
  • Secretary: Adrian Goss, general counsel, Bauer Media Group (Australia)
  • Treasurer: Maria Varsellona, group general counsel, ABB (Switzerland)

Born in Australia, Reinhold leads the legal and regulatory functions at du. She has won “Legal Department of the Year” Awards several times, been profiled in The Legal 500’s GC Powerlist: Middle East, and led the only team from a non-UK company recognized with the prestigious Lexcel practice management accreditation by the Law Society of England and Wales. The Legal 500 has described her as a “bastion for diversity,” and CommsMEA magazine listed her as one of the Middle East and Africa’s 20 leading women in the information and communications technology sector.

“ACC is moving in an exciting direction, embracing the ‘Age of the CLO’ and helping integrate in-house counsel all over the world in the new digital, international legal space,” she said. “I look forward to working with the ACC board and leadership to continue building our global presence.”

In addition, newly appointed directors of the global board of directors are:
  • Donny Ching, legal director, Royal Dutch Shell (Netherlands)
  • Robert Falk, general counsel, Truth Initiative (USA)
  • Cristina Gonzalez, chief legal officer, Staples (USA)
  • Melissa Kennedy, chief legal officer & executive vice president, Sun Life Financial (Canada)
  • Ed Paulis, assistant general counsel & vice president, Zurich North America Group (USA)
  • Scott Taylor, general counsel, executive vice president & secretary, Symantec (USA)
  • Liz Walker, general counsel, BT Global Services (UK)
  • ACC’s 45,000 global members also received some well-deserved recognition of their own. Following long tradition, ACC announced its service awards at the Annual Meeting, celebrating the outstanding contributions of individual members, chapters (organized by geography), and networks (organized by focus or discipline). Richardson and Reinhold gave the following awards at a ceremony on Sunday, 27 October:

  • Robert I. Townsend, Jr. Member of the Year Award: Jennifer Mailander, Deputy General Counsel, Fannie Mae
  • Jonathan S. Silber Network Member of the Year Award: David Cohen, Chief Legal Officer, Major League Business, LLC
  • Outstanding Network of the Year Award (Small Category): ACC Financial Services Network
  • Outstanding Network of the Year Award (Large Category): ACC Employment & Labor Law Network
  • Outstanding Network Sponsors of the Year Award: International Society of Primerus Law Firms and Seyfarth Shaw LLP
  • Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award (Innovative Programming Effort): ACC New Jersey
  • Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award (Best Membership Strategy): ACC Michigan
  • Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award (Best Partnership Program): ACC Louisiana
  • Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award (Best Diversity Initiative): ACC San Francisco Bay Area

As business and Francisco Bay Area technology change, the in-house role is changing with it. The 2019 ACC Annual Meeting will give attendees a unique look into the forces reshaping the law departments of the 21st century, like artificial intelligence and recent international regulations, as well as the best practices and perspectives of the best known and most innovative in-house leaders.
